The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) defines three levels of chimney inspection. Most Dallas–Fort Worth homeowners need a Level 1 inspection, but certain situations require the more detailed Level 2. Understanding the difference helps you schedule the right service.
Level 1 Inspection
A Level 1 inspection is a basic visual examination of all readily accessible parts of your chimney. The technician examines the firebox, smoke chamber, damper, flue interior (as visible from the top and bottom), chimney crown, and exterior masonry — all without special tools or equipment.
When you need a Level 1 inspection:
- Annual maintenance before heating season
- Routine safety check for a chimney in regular use
- Part of your annual chimney sweep

Level 2 Inspection
A Level 2 inspection includes everything in Level 1 plus video scanning of the flue interior. A specialized camera is lowered through the entire flue to identify hidden cracks, gaps, and damage that cannot be seen with a visual inspection alone.
When you need a Level 2 inspection:
- Before buying or selling a home
- After a chimney fire (even a small one)
- After changes to the system (new appliance, new flue liner, fuel type change)
- After severe weather damage

Level 3 Inspection
A Level 3 inspection involves removing components of the chimney structure — such as crown, flue tiles, or interior wall coverings — to access hidden areas. This is only needed when serious hazards are suspected and cannot be evaluated with less invasive methods.
